01 - Navajo Textiles, RARE Round Navajo Klagetoh Rug, by Irene Denny (47" x 51"), 1989
Handspun wool, 47 x 51 inches
A rarely-seen oval rug. A handful of these round rugs was woven during the 1970s-80s era, none before then and almost none since. Custom looms (closed warp looms just as the vertical rectangular Navajo handmade looms are closed warp) were made to finger-weave these on and, unlike the handmade vertical rectangular looms the Navajo usually made, only one size could be woven on each round loom. The fad ended almost as quickly as it began leaving only a very tiny number of round weavings on the marketplace.
